Year 3's open Prescott's very first Gaming Arcade
Well, school family, we have reached Week 10! We have made it and this gives us reason to celebrate. At the beginning of the term, we were thrown all sorts of curve balls and we were unsure of how the term would pan out. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our school community for your patience, understanding and flexibility to work with us during these uncertain times and changes to regular school life. Without your support, this term may have been incredibly difficult for our school family. Thank you! At the beginning of next term, we will be able to share with you some of the restrictions that will have been lifted, according to the guidance we will receive from AISSA (Association of Independent Schools South Australia) and SA Health.
While reflecting upon this term, I remembered some concepts from a book I read many years ago. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in trying to get a hold of a digital copy of this book to reread it. The title alone resonates with me: "Tough Times Never Last but Tough People Do" by Robert Schuller. ‘Every mountain has a peak. Every valley has its low point. Life has its ups and downs, its peaks and its valleys. No one is up all the time, nor are we down all the time. Problems do end. They do go away. They are all resolved in time.’
No matter what hills and valleys you may have faced this past term, know that our school community has been cheering you on. Even more importantly to understand, our God is the God of the hills and valleys. He desires to walk this life with us, in the ups and the downs, reminding us that tough times don't last, and He journeys with us through it all. I would love to draw your attention to one of my favourite songs by Tauren Wells called "Hills and Valleys". You can listen to this song on You Tube: Tauren Wells - Hills and Valleys (Lyric Video) The lyrics to this song encourage me during the valleys and the tough times, but also remind me that God gets me to the mountain peaks. What a beautiful promise.
As you spend time with your family over the next two weeks, I would like to encourage you to take some time to reflect upon and celebrate the tough times you have conquered together this term and the milestones you have reached, however big or small they may be. Remember, tough times don't last…tough people do! Have a blessed holiday with your loved ones and we look forward to a wonderful Term 3 together.
Blessings,
Tamara
One of the stories in Mark that I have been looking at recently with some of the students, is a story of a father’s request to Jesus to heal his child. (Mark 9:20 – 24)
Jesus is confronted by a scene of confusion where His disciples have failed to cast out an evil spirit from a boy. The boy is writhing on the ground and frothing at the mouth. The boy’s father is desperate.
Jesus calmly looks over the situation and ignoring the turmoil and confusion in front of Him, turns to the boy’s dad and asks, “How long has this been going on”? The dad replies, “from childhood”. Then the dad says, “Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”
I love Jesus reply, He says “What do you mean, ‘if I can’?” “Anything is possible if a person believes.” The dad hardly lets Jesus reply before he blurts out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!” The dad is basically saying, I do have some belief and I really want my boy to be healed, but I also have doubts, and I’m not sure if it is possible, so please help me to be more trusting.
Jesus reached down and lifted the boy to his feet, and he was made well.
Do we ever adopt a ‘if you can’ belief? How often do we ask for help, but don’t fully trust or believe that God will hear us or help us? Like the boy’s father, sometimes we forget who we are dealing with – God, who has the power to do anything. Matthew 19:26 says “With God all things are possible”.
This story demonstrates that Jesus hears us no matter what amount of faith we have. He loves us and accepts us just how we are, even if our belief or faith are not strong. Like the dad in the story, we just have to call out with what little faith we have and make a choice to believe, and Jesus will help us with the rest.
Have a great week,
Chaplain Phil
Changes in our School Canteen
Mrs Karen Chang will be finishing up in her role as Canteen Manager at the end of this term. We have appreciated her service, wonderful healthy food she provides and her heart for others. She will be missed and we wish her all the best in her new endeavours. We would like to welcome Mrs Margarita Abbott who will step into the role of Canteen Manager in Term 3. Margarita has been volunteering in the canteen for a while, as well as being a very active member in our school community through the CEC and organising our Scholastic Book Club for many years. We look forward to all that she will bring to our canteen for the remainder of the year.
Kind Donation to Nature Playground
Thanks to Pepper and her family for the kind donation of these creative wooden bowls for our Nature Playground. Our students will love playing with these in the sand pit and mud kitchen! Thank you for your thoughtfulness, Pepper!
Uniform Policy
This is a whole school reminder to remind you of the expectations of our uniform here at Prescott Primary Northern. There are a few items creeping in that are not uniform and this is a friendly reminder to correct the uniform for Term 3. We will be referring to the 2020 PPN Uniform Policy in this link - CLICK HERE! which is available on our website.
Shoes (page 3) - There are a lot of shoes that are incorrect at school at the moment. Shoes should laced, buckled or velcro, polished, black leather, low-heeled regulation school shoes. There are a lot of sneaker type, black shoes that are coming to school. These are incorrect. Please check your child's shoes and make sure they are correct before Term 3 begins.
Boys winter pants (page 2) - Boys pants should be School grey school trousers (Long cotton cargo pants are not permitted). The correct pants are available at the PPN Uniform Shop.
Hair cuts and Earrings (pages 4-5) - We are seeing a lot of hair cuts are going against the uniform policy. Boys must not have lines between the short and long parts and no lines cut into the hair. It is very embarrassing for your children when we speak to them as they know the expectation, yet the hair gets cut anyway. Please avoid any uncomfortable phone calls by ensuring the hair is cut correctly. Please read and see the pictures in the uniform policy.
Winter jackets (page 2) - A lot of students are coming in non-school winter jackets. We have a thick winter jacket available at the uniform shop. It must be the Navy school rain jacket with emblem (optional). Other jackets are not permitted unless a note is provided as to when you will be purchasing a school one.
These are the main areas we are asking for your help in. As always, you can send an SMS to the PPN school number or write a note regarding your child's uniform, requesting a uniform pass for the incorrect uniform. We are understanding and realise this year has been abnormal, however, there comes a time where we need to ensure our uniform policy is respected.
Thank you for help and understanding with these uniform requests. We are expecting all uniform matters to be resolved by Term 3.
Book of the Week
The Secrets of Magnolia Moon, by Edwina Wyatt. Shortlisted for 2020 – Younger readers
Each chapter in this novel, which captures Magnolia’s year of being nine and ends on Chapter Almost 10, reveals a secret that Magnolia is keeping. But the novel also chronicles a year of change for Magnolia. From her best friend moving to the birth of her little brother Finnegan, Magnolia navigates every challenge and secret that comes her way with the kind of authenticity and innocence that comes from being nine years wise.
‘The Secrets of Magnolia Moon’ is for readers who have enjoyed stories such as ‘The Cleo Stories’ (slightly younger audience), ‘Violet Mackerel’ and ‘Ruby Red Shoes’. It also has the same magic that is found in the ‘Kingdom of Silk’ series by Glenda Millard. Wyatt’s writing is sophisticated and elegant with a nice splash of quirkiness and gentle humour.
