Year 5 Adelaide Zoo Excursion

Year 1 Adelaide City Fire Station Excursion
Last Friday, as part of our ‘Taking Care of Me’ unit in Health, 1C went for a tour of the Adelaide City MFS Station. We were reminded of what to do in a fire and got to practice how to ‘Stop, Cover, Drop and Roll’ and ‘Get down low and Go Go Go!’.
Some of the highlights of the tour were getting to squirt the fire hose, climbing in the back of the fire truck and seeing the fire fighters slide down the pole. We were even lucky enough to see a fire truck heading out to a real fire!
1B and 1A are looking forward to their tours in the next couple of weeks.

North Wing Update

I was holding my one year old grandson the other day and we were conversing in goos and gahs and I began to start to think where life might lead this little man. Having the skills and inclination to lead your own life, as well as provide leadership for those around us, whether that’s in our friendships, families, workplace or society, is vital. Some research has been done around what sort of behaviours successful primary student leaders display. There are some great suggestions for helping develop leadership and resiliency in our kids in the article that follows. I hope you enjoy it.
“Your child has the potential to be a leader given the right circumstances and environment. The following five leadership skills have been observed in student leaders in Australian primary schools and can be promoted by parents at home.
Responsibility
Being a leader means that your child is willing to take responsibility and be accountable for their actions. Personal responsibility is shown when your child is accountable for their behaviour, for their belongings and for others. Practical ways to develop responsibility include:
- Giving them responsibility for part of their day
- Encouraging them to restore relationships with others when they mess up
- Taking responsibility for household chores
Communication
While most leadership positions require your child to speak publicly their communication skills can be developed through regular one-on-one or small group experiences at home and at school. Practical ways to develop your child’s communication skills include:
- One-on-one conversations with adults
- Regular discussions at the meal table
- Encourage your child to participate fully in speaking activities at school
Organisation
Personal organisational skills and the ability to organise others are important for effective leadership. Practical ways to develop organisational skills include encouraging your child to:
- Keep their personal space tidy and organised
- Use a diary to help manage their time
- Organise a weekly chores roster including all members of the family
Teamwork
Cooperating, encouraging and accepting others are essential qualities of an effective leader. Practical ways to develop a sense of teamwork include:
- Play team games where children work together
- Encourage siblings to cook and do other chores together
- Focusing on your child’s contribution to a team or group rather than individual achievement
Emotional intelligence
An underestimated quality shared by most admired leaders is their ability to remain calm when things don’t go well. This emotional intelligence skill requires self-awareness, an ability to recognise their emotions and respond appropriately to the emotions of others. You can nurture these skills in the following way:
- Help your child recognise their emotions
- Help your child recognise emotions in others
- Teach your child to shift their mood
Leaders are needed in all walks of life – at work, in school, in families, in sport and in the wider community. The skills of leadership are sewn in the first group that they belong to – their family. By encouraging your child to be a contributing member of their family you are also helping to develop leaderships skills they can practise outside their family.” (Grose, 2019)
Have a great week with your kids,
Mark B

Bible Studies
If you visit Prescott Primary Northern on a Friday morning before school, you will find 54 students gathered in the school library participating in Bible studies. We are blessed to have Pastors and dedicated volunteers from a number of our local churches, including Para Vista, Elizabeth, Trinity Gardens, The Grove and College Park, come and help lead studies with different groups of children.
It is exciting to watch our own student chaplains from Years 5-7, personally lead discussions with our younger students who want to know more about Jesus. As school chaplains, Pr Roland and I support and oversee the student chaplains as they work with the younger students each week. What better way for these students to cement their own faith in our amazing God, than to present and share with their younger peers each week!

Ryan's Ride for Refugees
At 8am on Sunday, Ryan Blyde began what was going to be a big bike ride.
After 7.5hrs on the bike, and a few short stops along the way Ryan's Ride for Refugees was complete.
At the end of the day Ryan had ridden 82.2km (this is the same as riding from PPN to Glenelg three and a bit times). More importantly Ryan had raised over $2,000 to support a school for Syrian refugee kids in Lebanon.
A big thanks to all the friends, teachers and families that supported this amazing achievement.
