Year 2 Farm Barn Excursion
Full of hope and courage, the Year 2 students, their teachers and a handful of brave parent helpers rode the Prescott Primary buses through the Adelaide Hills last week and eventually disembarked at Hahndorf Farm Barn.
There, to continue their quest for exploring the scientific concept of “Growing and Changing” further, they excitedly joined in a number of activities to build upon their understanding and appreciation of all things natural – including the fresh country air (phew!).
Some highlights were:
- Handling reptiles (pythons and lizards)
- Holding ducklings
- Milking a cow (conversation overheard: “I can name five things with dairy: butter, ice-cream, cheese and two cows!”)
- Serving up carrots to friendly emus – using heads (literally!)
- Bottle-feeding lambs and kids (the latter was the animal kind; students brought their own drink bottles)
- Rescuing some very important papers from a hungry goat, who later showed his displeasure by leaving an unpleasant deposit
- Rescuing a kid that had escaped (no relation to Billy the Kid and again, no student escaped)
- Feeding a camel
- Some teachers kissing a camel; and
- Holding rabbits and guinea pigs.
Overall, it was a fantastic experience had by all – although it was a rainy day, it only rained whilst everyone was indoors, giving plenty of opportunity to enjoy and marvel at God’s creation using a variety of senses.
A big thank you to the staff at Hahndorf Farm Barn, as well as the parents and bus drivers who helped supervise, but most of all, to the Creator and Sustainer of life, for providing all creatures great and small.
Oh, and no animals were harmed during this event.

A Little Bit of Spice and All Things Nice
The aroma of spices from rich cultural traditions elicits memories of warm heart-felt cooking from our childhood. Those dishes that our family cooked with love and care with just the right balance of spice and all things nice. This week at Prescott Primary Northern, students had the opportunity to participate in a celebration of spices in nature play. From the pungent aroma of ginger and coriander to the more subtle aromas of mustard and rosemary children mixed, kneaded and created their own spice filled dishes. They engaged all of their senses in this nature play experience as they created and celebrated spices together.
I have recently been watching some recordings of speeches by a person I hold in very high esteem – Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jnr. There is a depth to Dr King’s thinking and speaking that I find challenging. I had also been considering the foundations we need to provide our children in their school years and these thoughts were encouraged by a speech of Dr King’s that I watched. He presented to a group of high school students at their graduation in October of 1967. He said, ” I want to ask you a question, and that is: What is your life’s blueprint?
Whenever a building is constructed, you usually have an architect who draws a blueprint, and that blueprint serves as the pattern, as the guide, and a building is not well erected without a good, solid blueprint.
Now each of you is in the process of building the structure of your lives, and the question is whether you have a proper, a solid and a sound blueprint.
I want to suggest some of the things that should begin your life’s blueprint. Number one in your life’s blueprint, should be a deep belief in your own dignity, your worth and your own somebodiness. Don’t allow anybody to make you feel that you’re nobody. Always feel that you count. Always feel that you have worth, and always feel that your life has ultimate significance.” (King, 1967)
As we parent and teach, how do we build our children’s sense of worth and identity? How do we let them know that they count? How do we help them feel and know that their lives have ultimate significance? At the very beginning of a child’s learning journey at Prescott Primary Northern, our Foundation students do a group of lessons called “The King’s Kids.” I have wonderful memories of our little ones wearing a little crown around the school. When I asked one little guy what it was for, he told me that he was wearing it because he was a child of the king of the whole world. I think this is what Dr King was talking about in his speech. Helping our kids know they count, that they, and their lives are significant. I also think we can model this to our children when we use words like, “We are here for a reason,” and, “you can make a difference to those around you.”
The Bible says, Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Have a great week with your kids,
Mark B
Have you ever tried to tell God how to answer your prayers?
I have been guilty of this on many occasions. It usually starts with me telling God what I want Him to do and then I expect it to happen just as I had planned.
A couple of months ago I was wrestling with God looking for him to provide direction in matter that seemed big to me at the time. It was a one-way conversation. I told God what I wanted Him to do. But God was quiet. I set out the terms and conditions and I asked Him for an answer, but still God was silent. In frustration, I got cranky with God and gave Him an ultimatum, then went for a walk. I had managed to walk for about 10mins when my wife’s phone rang. It was an answer to my prayer, but God knew I wasn’t ready to listen, so He answered me by speaking through my wife. God seldom answers us the way that we expect.
On another occasion just a few weeks ago, I was struggling to decide where my family and I could best serve God. Do we stay in financial comfort with a secure Job that is fulfilling, or do I follow where God was leading which could have significant financial ramifications? It was starting to stress me out and I was wrestling with God over the decision. Even though I knew from previous experience that God leads the way, my human side said it was too much for God! I knew that God always provides and goes with us on the Journey if we let Him, but it is sometimes hard to trust Him.
That morning, I was paying some bills using my phone when I found that I had some extra money in my account. I was taken back as I counted the zeros. I was in complete disbelief as I counted a 6-figure sum of money in my bank account. I rang my wife to confirm how much money was in my account. $100,002.77 was staring at me on my phone screen. Now some of this money was mine, the $2.77, but the rest had been deposited in my account by a random person.
I heard God speak loud and clear, “Do not worry about anything but in everything trust Me and I will show you the way.”
(By the way, I contacted the bank and the money was taken back out of my bank account)
I was reminded again that God is in control of everything. I just need to trust in Him, and He will direct my path.
Next year, my family and I are moving to Queensland, we are trusting in God in the next steps in our journey. Thank you, parents, students, and staff, for a memorable 3 years at Prescott Primary Northern. I have been so blessed to get to know many of you and I will cherish the memories I have made.
May I remind you to put your trust in God and always bring Him on your journey. Journeying with Jesus is so much better than facing the journey alone. He will direct your path if you be patient and let Him work.
Have a great week, and thank you again,
Chaplain Phil
UPDATE: COVID Management
You have very likely heard the news that all staff, both employees and volunteers in educational settings are now mandated to be fully vaccinated against COVID19 by the time school resumes in 2022. We are currently working through the management of this with our employees and will begin working with our volunteers in the new school year. We value the work that our volunteers do and are keen to continue the relationship we have with them, while ensuring that we meet all of the requirements under the mandate.
We anticipate that this mandate will have an impact on how we are able to deliver some of our services at school if we are not able to get sufficient vaccinated volunteers or staff, but please know we will do everything we possibly can to continue our program at the highest standards.
School Holiday Office Hours
Holiday hours will apply to our Front Office 8.30am - 3.30pm Mon - Thurs, and 8.30am - 3.00pm Fri. Front Office will be closed between Monday 20 December 2021 and reopen Monday 17 January 2022.

Food Drive
Lunch Deliveries
We would like you to know that taking commercial/fast food type lunches (e.g. Hungry Jacks, MacDonalds, Subway etc.) to classrooms for students is something we will no longer do. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, there are risks involved in food being served later than it should be, and the school is not able to pass that food on. The foods in question can be particularly susceptible to these risks. Secondly, the arrival of some of the commercial foods into a classroom can be very unsettling for the class. Finally, it can create a feeling of lack for some children in the class whose family cannot, or choose not to provide these popular meals for their child.
We provide healthy fresh food options at our canteen that are well-priced, and we are willing to help sort something at short notice if it is an emergency.
Please do not be offended if we say we are not able to deliver these lunches to your child’s classroom.
Many thanks
