The Power of Connection
What a joy it is to celebrate learning! The Foundation students and their families participated in a Come and Play Day at Prescott Primary Northern. The shared focus of learning was the concept of living and non-living things. Parents and students were filled with eager anticipation knowing that this shared nature play experience would enrich their understanding of the world around them but most importantly would give them the opportunity to build meaningful memories together. With Autumn sunshine and a map in hand, students and their families gleefully visited each learning station. The curious minds observed the dart of a fish, the scamper of a lizard and the camouflage of a stick insect. Many hands helped our garden grow by planting seeds and plants in pots. Students left their mark by illustrating nature on rocks and creating salt dough animals and their habitat. Curiosity and questions were raised when they had to identify and name the toy animal in an enclosed box using touch alone. Stories of living things were shared under the shade of an old gum tree, many sitting together, one, two and three. Cherished was the opportunity to be free to play and create with the non-living items of crates, tubes, tyres and tubs in the nature play space where there is no limit to the playful imagination and growing mind. The power of connection was intrinsically felt as families met and shared in this rich learning together as a community.
Parents gained an insight into their child’s learning environment and the community that actively supports, nurtures and provides the knowledge, skills, time and space for the wholistic development of each student.
“Many of the fundamental tasks that children must achieve, such as, exploring, risk-taking, fine and gross motor development and the absorption of vast amounts of basic knowledge, can be most effectively learned through outdoor play.” Edgar L and Rheta A Berkley
I saw something beautiful yesterday. Our Foundation students had a “Come and Play” day with their parents yesterday morning. Miss Bernoth, Mrs Davis and Mrs Harder organised a range of activities based on a treasure hunt map for the children and asked parents to come along and join with their children and “play” together. What I saw was inspiring to me as an educator. I watched as parents were dragged by the hand into the school world of their children. I couldn’t help but smile as I saw mums, dads, grandparents, uncles, aunties and friends drawn into what the children saw and did. The joy and enthusiasm of going from one spot to the next, then back again, was nothing sort of incredible. That, of course, got me reflecting about how I need to do that more; to see school, learning, and life from the children’s perspectives. To feel what is important to them and why. I’m not sure about you, but it is so easy to get caught up in the responsibilities, life’s hustle and bustle, reports, emails and paperwork, and not look at things through kid’s eyes. Not only that, it’s just plan fun! Looking at the world in wonder and curiosity is something the little ones teach me every day. I think yesterday’s “come and play” also sent a very important message to the children. I think it said, “You matter to us. Your learning matters to us.” These are some of the most important messages those little eyes and ears will ever see and hear. So a big shout out to the families who were able to come and the team that put it all together – thank you.
On another note, I will be taking some time off over the next few weeks to spend with my family. Our school will be in the very capable hands of Mr Davis and Miss Bernoth, and I will see you all again in May.
Have a great week with your kids,
Mark B
In Luke 6:46, Jesus ends the greatest sermon ever preached with these words, “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?” The idea that Jesus shared was simple, and yet impossible to fulfill, because when it comes to loving our enemies, and praying for people who persecute us, all of us fall short.
This was the key point of the 5th Century prayer by Augustine the Bishop of Hippo, “Oh God, grant what thou commandest.” Through his prayer, Augustine was making it clear that the only way that we can “do what Jesus says,” is through God’s power. In other words, God’s commandments and teachings in the Bible are less about what he wants us to do, and more about what he wants to do in us, and through us.
When Jesus gives us amazing truths that can revolutionise our world like loving our enemies, and forgiving those who hurt us, these are promises of what he can do in our lives when he is living in our hearts.
So if you find yourself struggling to do what Jesus says, try praying a modernised version of Augustine’s prayer, “Dear God, please give me the power, love, and strength, to live out your will for my life.”
God bless,
