The Power of Connection
What a joy it is to celebrate learning! The Foundation students and their families participated in a Come and Play Day at Prescott Primary Northern. The shared focus of learning was the concept of living and non-living things. Parents and students were filled with eager anticipation knowing that this shared nature play experience would enrich their understanding of the world around them but most importantly would give them the opportunity to build meaningful memories together. With Autumn sunshine and a map in hand, students and their families gleefully visited each learning station. The curious minds observed the dart of a fish, the scamper of a lizard and the camouflage of a stick insect. Many hands helped our garden grow by planting seeds and plants in pots. Students left their mark by illustrating nature on rocks and creating salt dough animals and their habitat. Curiosity and questions were raised when they had to identify and name the toy animal in an enclosed box using touch alone. Stories of living things were shared under the shade of an old gum tree, many sitting together, one, two and three. Cherished was the opportunity to be free to play and create with the non-living items of crates, tubes, tyres and tubs in the nature play space where there is no limit to the playful imagination and growing mind. The power of connection was intrinsically felt as families met and shared in this rich learning together as a community.
Parents gained an insight into their child’s learning environment and the community that actively supports, nurtures and provides the knowledge, skills, time and space for the wholistic development of each student.
“Many of the fundamental tasks that children must achieve, such as, exploring, risk-taking, fine and gross motor development and the absorption of vast amounts of basic knowledge, can be most effectively learned through outdoor play.” Edgar L and Rheta A Berkley
