Welcome to Prescott Primary Northern for 2020! I can hardly believe I am writing that. I still remember the years leading up to the year 2000 and how monumental that year was and here we are two decades later. As I look at the year ahead, I am reminded of a time a couple of years ago where we had to do an art activity as a part of some leadership meetings. We were given a blank piece of silk and lots of different coloured paints and asked to make whatever we wanted on the silk. Simple enough request, I guess. However, as I looked at the silk and the paints, my mind went into a whirl. Who should I make this for? What colours work well together? What might it be used for? What if I mess this up? How amazing could this look? Where should I start? The same sorts of questions have been zooming around in my head over the break and I think our kids have some similar sorts of reflections at the start of the new school year. I would like to say to them (and you) that we have another great year planned at Prescott Primary Northern with lots and things that have worked well in the past, as well as some new innovations, facilities and activities.
We would love to see you all at our Parent Information Sessions this evening so you can learn more about what is happening in your child’s classroom for this year. Just head to your student’s classroom at either 6, 6.30 or 7pm and you’ll learn lots! It will also give you a chance to have a look at some of the developments we have been working on around the place. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to get our new classrooms finished for the start of school, but we plan to move our Year 4s in at the start of Week 6. The back verandah area is available to our children and it’s great and is worth a look.
It was wonderful to hear the joy and enthusiasm among our children yesterday as they met up again with friends and headed off to new classrooms and into a new year.
Have a great week with your kids,
Mark B
The chaplaincy team would like to welcome you to the new school year at Prescott Primary Northern. Whether you are a new family or a returning family we hope you have a great first week and we look forward to the opportunity to connect with you all throughout the year.

Connections matter! Strong ties with family, friends, school and God provide us with happiness, security, support and a sense of purpose. If you would like to meet new families and make meaningful connections, there will be many opportunities for our school families to interact over the year. Our Chaplaincy team has planned several free Friday night or Saturday night social and spiritual events over the year. Please look out for these ‘Connect 4’ events and plan to come along with your family and friends.
Yesterday we had the opportunity to connect with 30+ new school families at our ‘Tears and Cheers’ morning tea. Pr Roland and I relished the opportunity to welcome and serve the new parents after morning drop-off. The hot drinks were flowing and the awesome home-made jam and cream scones were a big hit.
Please let me know if our team can assist your child or your family in any way during your time here at PPN. Pr Roland and I are contactable through our email, chaplain@ppn.sa.edu.au. I hope this will be a rewarding year for your whole family.
The ‘Connect 4’ calendar will be published shortly. Look out for our first ‘Family Fun Games Night’ scheduled early Term 1.
Looking forward to connecting with you all,
Regards
Phillip Lillehagen
Chess Club
After school Chess Club will begin on Tuesday of Week 3, at 3.20 pm and go until 4.15 pm in the Discovery Centre. This is also a come and try day for those that are not sure if they want to join Chess Club, they can come for this day with no obligation or cost. We do have a chess coach that comes into teach chess, so there is a cost involved for those that decide to join (usually between $30 and $35, depending on how many students we have).
Chess Club is for students in Year 2-6, however if you have a child in Year 1 that has played chess before, or you believe could sit and concentrate for an hour after school, please come and see me to see if there are any spaces left. PPN IT Agreement 2020
Cyber-safety is important to us here at PPN and we take it very seriously. This week marks the start of a new year and we are already looking to educate the students on how they can be safe online and on the computers. I have attached a link to our updated IT User Agreement for Students at PPN. Mrs. Nairn and myself will go through the IT Agreement in each class this week and highlight important parts to it. Students will have a chance to ask any questions that they may have. We find this is a great way to cover any misconceptions that students may have about use of IT here at Prescott Primary Northern. We have decided to have just one IT agreement for the whole school this year. This means that some words are quite big for our junior school, however, the ideas remain the same. The students are not expected to read it themselves but work through it with a parent to discuss the importance of being safe on the devices at school. What we require of you is to look through the IT agreement with your child/ren and sign the sheet that will come home this week. This helps us know that you are on the same page as us here at PPN and know the expectations for IT use. The teachers will discuss the IT Agreement briefly tonight at the Parent Information Evening- beginning at 6:00pm with new sessions at 6:30pm and 7pm.
If you require a paper copy, please reply to this email and I will get one to your child's class teacher for you.

Asthma/Medical Records
Each year the school needs to update student asthma records. If your child is currently listed as asthmatic, you will receive an asthma record to complete and return to school.
If your child has recently been diagnosed with asthma, please update and upload the plan in Consent2Go. If you are unable to do this, please call for information and help.
Medication
If your child requires regular medication to be administered during school hours, please send it to Student Services. Please note that staff may only give medication, prescribed by a doctor, in an original, labelled (with your child’s name) pharmacy container. Any other medication that your child requires must be in the original packaging, labelled with their name and clear instructions on how and when it may administered.
Drop and Go/Pick Up Zone
- Please enter the new Drive Through road via the current church car park entrance off Nelson Road.
- Drive down towards the bottom of the Nature Playground and pull in to the pick-up spaces parallel with Wright Road.
- This area will be open from 8:30am until 8:55am in the morning and 3:20pm until 3:45pm in the afternoon. A staff member will be stationed during these times to assist your child/ren in and out of your vehicle.
- Please note: To speed up the pick-up process, families are requested to display their child's name in an easy to see location for the duty teachers to quickly call the children to the pick-up line. It is important that during these times, you do not leave your vehicle. Further: that the bus zone along Wright Road is for buses only. NOT TO BE USED BY CARS at any time.
School Car Park
Please keep the following information in mind when using our school car parks:
- Maximum speed limit—10kph
- Use the marked car park areas—you must be parked prior to your children exiting your car—do not stop in the middle of the car park and let your children out while your car is still running
- Look out for little people
- Please keep to designated walkways
- Only cross the carpark at the crossing provided
- The car park closest to the double yellow gates in the church carpark, is only for those who have a Disabled Parking Permit. Please do not park there unless you have the permit. There are also 3 Disabled Carparks over by the main church entrance for those with the appropriate permits.
- No right turn is permitted out of the Car Park on Nelson Road. Please turn left and go round the roundabout.
Children need to be accompanied by an adult at all times in our car park.
If you arrive 10 minutes after the afternoon bell the car parks are usually less congested.
Please make sure you cross at the correct spots in the Car Park! Ensure you walk behind the bollards and cross at the crossing.
Thank you in advance!
Contact Details
If you move or have new mobile or home telephone numbers, please let the Office know. Children can get distressed if we are unable to contact parents because we do not have their current details. Please keep emergency contact details (eg grandma, aunty) up to date as well—thanks!
Student Absences
Please inform the school if your child is away or will be late to class either by:
- Phone on 8396 2577
- SMS on 0429 557 989
- Or email: reception@ppn.sa.edu.au
For extended periods of absence please fill in the official Exemption Form.
Uniform Passes
There are times throughout the year when students do not wear a part of the uniform due to something unforeseen happening. When this occurs, the parent/carer is to write a note, send an email to reception@ppn.sa.edu.au or an SMS to 0429 557 989 explaining the situation and the student will be issued with a uniform pass for the day.
Students will not be issued with a pass without first presenting a note from home.
A uniform notification will be issued to children without a uniform pass, and parents will be asked to address this promptly.
Safe School Procedures
School gates will be closed between 9:15am and 3:00pm for the safety of our students. If you are coming to the school between these times, come through the Office and ensure that you sign our visitors register on our iPad and take a visitor’s identification tag. If you are reading or helping out anywhere in the school between these times, you should also sign our visitors’ register on our iPad and wear a visitor’s identification tag. By signing-in you are letting the office staff know where you are, so that you can be accounted for in an emergency situation. Parents who help regularly with reading, crafts, excursions etc, will be asked to complete a Volunteer Pack which will include a copy of their Police Report and our Prescott Schools Code of Conduct.

Basketball Coaches Needed
Welcome back to another school year, I will be looking after basketball this year. We have had lots of students sign up for basketball and are in the process of organising coaches and teams as the competition begins next week. We currently do not have enough coaches for a number of our teams and are looking for parents/grandparents/volunteers who would be willing to help out (especially looking for anyone that is able to coach years 2 and 3). Unfortunately, if we are unable to get enough coaches, we will may not be able to enter some of our teams in this year's competition. Thanks again to those who have already offered to help coach this year.
Please contact me if you are interested by the end of this week (31st of January) – sharneytruscott@ppn.sa.edu.au
Thank you, Sharney Truscott.
