Library Borrowing is Back
The books have been lonely, but after weeks of restrictions we were finally able to welcome students back to library borrowing this week! It's been so good to see students seek out old favourites, discover brand new books, and share the joy of reading with their friends. We're looking forward to seeing students make the most of the great library we have here at PPN.
Planting a Garden
This week, our Foundation students had the opportunity to plant a small herb garden. We are planting a pizza herb garden to watch it grow and will use the produce on our mini pizzas, once they have grown big enough!
The students planted basil, parsley, oregano and some thyme. They carefully dug a hole, made it nice and wet, planted a seedling, and covered it carefully with soil and mulch. Then they made sure each seedling had plenty of water to drink.
The students were enthusiastic planters, discussing each step and the needs of a plant eagerly. Why not make a pizza garden with your family! It is easy to do and yummy to eat.

What a week it has been! I am not sure about you, but I have certainly been moved by some of the news and devastating situations in the world around us, particularly this past week.
We have seen footage of people escaping the tragedy of war in Europe, and footage of people stranded in floodwaters throughout South East Queensland and North New South Wales. My heart breaks for those who have lost family, friends and possessions in both of these tragic events. As I have watched this footage on the news, I have sat in absolute disbelief at how quickly the worlds of these victims changed.
One moment life was "normal", the next, they were needing to be rescued.
Take a moment to reflect on a time when you or your family may have needed to be rescued. It may not have been from war or natural disasters, but perhaps simpler reasons, such as, running out of fuel, or being accidentally locked out, rescuing a little one from falling from a couch or bed, or perhaps it was for a deeper reason that involved being emotionally or physically rescued from a situation bringing harm.
Whatever the reason for needing rescuing, the gratefulness and relief that follows is the same, and often spurs us on to reach out and help others.
This week, I was incredibly moved by one of our students and her attitude to life. The young lady had faced a rather traumatic experience in her life and had reached out to her safe adults at school, who are supporting her through this. The following day, I was met by this student who stopped me and said, "Miss B…I am giving out smiles today." She then proceeded to give me a smiley face sticker from the roll of stickers she carried. Knowing what she was currently experiencing in her life, and seeing her beaming smile and choosing to make a difference in the lives around her, moved me to tears. She then continued down the walkway, handing out "smiles" as she went.
This incredible young lady reminded me of a quote by a favourite Christian speaker, Christine Caine: "God uses rescued people to rescue people."
It is my prayer this week, that if you are in need of rescue, you can reach out to someone in our school community. May you also look for ways to support and rescue those around you, choosing to make a positive difference in the lives around you. As you move forward into the week ahead, hold onto the following promise from God: "I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you." Isaiah 46:4b
Blessings,
Tamara
Do you ever let your phone battery go flat?
If you’re like me the answer is no, because when our phone battery goes flat, we suddenly don’t know what else to do, and start to worry that people won’t be able to contact us.
Just like the batteries in our electronic devices, we too need time to recharge. It’s important that we take a break so that we can function at 100% capacity. We are living in a world where we have to be flexible to the ever-changing environment, and now more than ever it’s important that we are functioning at 100%.
Maybe it’s time to take a break and spend some time with family and friends, or even take some time for yourself. It’s time to disconnect so we can recharge!
When we turn to God for help to recharge he says: “Even youths will become exhausted, and young men will give up. But those who wait on the LORD will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:30
Blessings,
Pr Tiana
How much meaning do you find in the things that you do?
Do you feel that your life has purpose?
Often we can reduce our wellbeing – or that of our children – into a simple question of ‘how happy are they?’ But wellbeing is much more than that.
Psychologists continue to find that happiness and pleasure (known as hedonic wellbeing) are not enough to sustain real wellbeing. We also need eudemonic wellbeing – or, a sense of meaning and purpose in what we do.
It is useful to step back from time to time and reflect on the sense of meaning and purpose we are experiencing – a tough thing to do amongst the busy-ness of parenting and working, but useful none-the-less:
- How do you see your job? Is it just a way to earn money or do you feel like it’s your ‘calling’?
- What impact have you had on others over the past few years – in your work, your friendships or in other ways?
- What legacy have you left behind and what kind of legacy would you like to leave in the future?
Ensuring that we have the opportunity to find meaning and purpose in life is a key part of experiencing wellbeing. And, it’s important that we help our children find the same.
Find teachable moments that demonstrate life isn’t just about being happy or experiencing pleasure, but doing things that align with your values and beliefs, contribute positively to others and, even as kids, creates a legacy they can be proud of. This can include simple things like:
- Talking about your work and how you find or create meaning in it.
- Joining them in volunteer activities
- Supporting and encouraging fundraising for a charity of their choice
- Sharing stories of people in your family or history that have lived purpose-filled lives
May you be encouraged that as an engaged and supportive parent you are undertaking one of the meaningful and purpose-filled tasks life can give. Thank you!
