Chaplain's Remarks

A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand

Growing up, did you ever ask your Dad for something, and then run to your Mum and ask the same question when the answer from your Dad was ‘No’, or not what you wanted?  When I tried this as a child, I learnt very quickly that it didn’t work. You see, Mum and Dad were on the same page and united in their decisions. It was foolish to try and divide them as they parented as one.

Jesus said, "a house divided against itself cannot stand". Luke 11:17 - 18

The story in Luke 11 tells of Jesus casting-out demons from a man.  People who were observing, claimed that Jesus cast out the demons by the power of Satan, rather than by God’s power. Jesus responds by saying the accusation is completely irrational. Jesus explains that demons are Satan’s loyal subjects, so why would Satan use his powers to fight against himself? Why would Satan harm his own interests? Satan wants his own kingdom to succeed, so if it is not united, then his kingdom cannot stand, and it will fail and fall.

Jesus’ statement is a universal truth. No household or kingdom can stand if it is divided. Unity is absolutely essential for the well-being and success of any family or kingdom.

I encourage you to promote unity within your family and cooperatively work together. But more importantly, I encourage you to not be divided from God. Invite Jesus into your heart and into your home today and be unified with Him.

Have a great week,
